Anti-Piracy Patrols

New Zealand has a direct interest in preventing piracy on merchant shipping and protecting the crews of merchant vessels from harm.  Ninety-nine per cent of New Zealand's trade (by volume) is carried by merchant shipping, and piracy in key sea-lanes, such as the Indian Ocean can affect our trade by raising shipping costs or increasing the time it takes for goods to reach market.

The Royal New Zealand Navy will be taking part in international anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Gulf of Oman from late 2013.
