David and Uemoto spent twenty two hours treading water off the coast of Kona on the Big Island after their small twin engine plane lost power and ditched into the sea on July 14, 2016. A huge sea and air search was launched involving the US Coast Guard, US Navy and coalition forces from RIMPAC. A RNZAF P-3K2 was re-tasked and latter spotted wreckage early the following morning. The search area was narrowed and the pilots were found later that morning by a US Coast Guard helicopter.
