OLPHERT: Change of Command - June 2018

The symbol of command is exchanged as LTCDR Moloney takes command of HMNZS OLPHERT.

OLPHERT recently held a Change of Command ceremony at HMNZS OLPHERT, Petone, Wellington.

Lieutenant Commander Richard Davies, RNZN relinquished command to Lieutenant Commander Kerry Moloney, RNZNVR at a ceremony presided over by the Acting Deputy Chief of Navy, Captain Maxine Lawes RNZN.

LTCDR Moloney joined the Naval Reserve in 1972 as a Junior Seaman before joining the Royal New Zealand Navy in September 1973 as a Weapons Electrical Mechanic. In December 1975 he was discharged from the Royal New Zealand Navy at his own request and pursued an Engineering career with the New Zealand Railways. 

In 1979 he re-engaged with the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve.

As a Reservist he has served as a Marine Engineering Rating on the Seaward Defence Motor Launches; MAKO, MANGA, PAEA, PARORE, and KOURA and the Lake Class Patrol Boats; PUKAKI, ROTOITI and TAUPO and after gaining his Engineering charge ticket served as Marine Engineering Officer aboard, MOA, KIWI, WAKAKURA and HINAU.

Promoted to Command Warrant Officer in 2004. Commissioned in 2006, promoted to Lieutenant in 2007 and to Lieutenant Commander in 2011.

He has held various appointments in the Training and Engineering roles and latterly Executive Officer HMNZS OLPHERT.

He graduated from the Australian Defence Force Staff College, Canberra in 2016.

He is appointed Commanding Officer of HMNZS OLPHERT effective 26 June 2018.
