The Royal New Zealand Navy Band

The Royal New Zealand Navy Band is an extremely versatile ensemble of full time professional military musicians. The Band's primary role is to perform as a Military Band providing music for the ceremonial, public relations, recruiting and entertainment requirements of the Royal New Zealand Navy, the New Zealand Defence Force and the New Zealand Government.

Due to the diverse nature of engagements at which the Band performs the musicians can reconfigure themselves into a variety of ensembles. These include a Concert Band, Parade Band, Big Band and Jazz Combo, Rock Band, Brass Quintet or Brass Ensemble, Saxophone or Woodwind Ensemble and a Dixie Band.

The Navy Band has a maximum of 32 full time musicians.

Local and International Profile

A professional and high standard of performance is demanded of the Band's musicians in whatever format or genre it is performing. For this reason it is in demand both locally and internationally. Public and school concert tours within New Zealand occur three or four times annually. Internationally the Band has toured, performed in concerts and at Military Tattoos in places such as Korea, Japan, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Canada, Turkey, England and Australia.

The Band regularly performs with a range of well known New Zealand musicians in all genres. Recently popular singers Dave Dobbyn and Hollie Smith, international artist Geoff Sewell, and world renowned opera singers Dame Malvina Major and Simon O'Neill have performed with the band. Instrumentalists David Bremner (NZSO trombonist), Stephen de Pledge (piano soloist), Rodger Fox (jazz legend) and STRIKE percussion have also collaborated.

Band on Base

The Navy Band is based at HMNZS PHILOMEL in Devonport on Auckland’s North Shore. Rehearsals take place in a purpose built facility at “Narrow Neck” which includes numerous individual practise rooms, ensemble facilities, an industry standard recording studio and a Concert Band auditorium. The daily routine is similar to that of other service personnel, but does include out of hours performances during evenings and weekends. Navy musicians do not serve at sea, however there is a requirement to occasionally travel both nationally and internationally.
